As the year approaches midpoint, tenders for selenium increase, and selenium prices weaken [SMM Selenium Market Analysis]

Published: Jun 20, 2025 15:08

SMM June 20 News: After a period of weak but stable market prices for domestic selenium products, as June arrived, marking the mid-year point, the off-season effect began to weaken selenium prices. Additionally, recent tenders by numerous selenium producers to sell their products have increased market supply pressure. Many producers increased their shipments ahead of the mid-year, putting downward pressure on selenium prices. For instance, according to unverified market news, Daye Nonferrous Metals recently publicly sold 25 mt (metal content) of crude selenium with a product quality of approximately 91% content. It was ultimately sold at a price higher than 105,000 yuan/mt (metal content), with the successful bidder being a company in the southwest that purchased the entire lot. According to official news from Jinchuan Group Tonggui Co., Ltd., the company publicly sold approximately 28-36 mt (metal content) of crude selenium produced in June 2025, with all lots ultimately sold. However, the company has not yet disclosed specific transaction details. Additionally, according to official news from Yunnan Copper Science & Technology Development Co., Ltd., the company recently publicly sold approximately 30 mt (metal content) of selenium ingots, with a metal content grade of selenium ≥99% (based on the factory test results of Yunnan Copper Science & Technology, which only guarantees the main element, selenium). Currently, the average price of SMM crude selenium is 107.5 yuan/kg, the average price of selenium dioxide is 97.5 yuan/kg, the average price of 99.9% selenium powder is 180 yuan/kg, and the average price of 99.99% selenium powder is 265 yuan/kg.

Many market participants have stated that, from the perspective of selenium's downstream industries, such as the healthy operating conditions of manganese plants this year, this will provide some support for future selenium prices. However, in the coming period, it is possible that producers such as Jinlong Copper and Jiangxi Copper Corporation may also gradually release their shipments, and supply pressure will persist.

Silicon Metal Market Review for January and Outlook for February
In January, the silicon metal market experienced a relatively loose supply-demand balance, with a theoretical inventory buildup of approximately 30,000 mt. In February, both supply and demand contracted simultaneously, and the market is expected to show a tight balance or minor destocking. The current high industry inventory still requires time to be digested, and the sustainability of destocking remains a key variable affecting price trends and market sentiment.

A plant in northern China is calling for bids for indium ingots and bismuth ingots
SMM, February 6 - According to SMM’s investigation of market information, a large smelter in northern China began public bidding for a certain quantity of indium ingots and bismuth ingots starting yesterday. Market sources indicate that the starting price for these indium ingots exceeds 4,000 yuan per kilogram, while the starting price for bismuth ingots is above 150,000 yuan per ton. The bidding results are expected to be announced before the Spring Festival. Market participants note that, given the clear trend of sluggish trading activity ahead of the Spring Festival, the timing of this bidding is not ideal. However, the relatively favorable starting prices have generated considerable market anticipation for the outcome of the bidding.
